Front-end Web Developer 

The front-end developer will be responsible for architecting code crucial for dynamic, desktop and mobile solutions for the redesign of the Community PlanIt software. The successful candidate should be familiar with all relevant HTML 5 languages and have some familiarity with game dynamics and gamification. They should have strong analytical skills, written and verbal communication skills, and be passionate about community development, and discovering new ways of using technology to enhance democracy.  Responsibilities include:

  • Transforming existing desktop web pages into highly optimized and flexible mobile web pages
  • Reproducing the mobile app experience within a web environment
  • Working toward weekly milestones on the development of high-visibility, high quality mobile solutions
  • Collaborating with team to identify challenges and opportunities within projects
  • Contribute to a culture of innovation and teamwork

 

Content Developer

We are seeking an energetic, creative, and meticulous content developer eager to work with communities in fostering civic engagement, improving local planning processes, and enhancing democracy. The content developer will work part-time in shaping the content of Community PlanIt, an online social media game that responds to a growing concern among planners, government officials, and educators that too few voices are represented in important local planning efforts. She or he will work with both Engagement Game Lab staff and our community partners in creating content that engages users of multiple age groups and backgrounds, embraces local community interests and needs, and provokes conversation valuable to the community planning process.  The ideal candidate should have strong skills in writing, intercultural communications, and coordinating. A background in interactive media/game writing, urban planning, education, or community outreach is great. Experience in basic media production (video and image editing) is also helpful. Responsibilities include:

  • Working with lab staff and community partners in creating engaging questions, themes, and discussion topics to bring community voices into the local planning process
  • Helping to articulate pertinent information from the planners to the general public
  • Creating narratives and game structures that hold players’ attentions over the length of the game instance
  • Using images and videos to integrate local flavor into the Community PlanIt interface
  • Maintaining healthy and productive relationships with our community partners
  • Collaborating with team to identify challenges and opportunities within projects
  • Contributing to a culture of innovation and teamwork

The Engagement Game Lab in the Department of Visual and Media Arts at Emerson College is seeking creative and enthusiastic students interested in working part time on projects related to the use of games, new media, and innovative technologies for civic engagement.  Videographers, editors, animators, graphic designers, game developers, marketing and communications and media studies majors are all welcome to contact us for more information on how you might fit into the Engagement Game Lab team.
